Shopping Street

The commercial trading of raw silk and other products was previously conducted in outdoor stalls. To bring stability, the "Common Sakai Market" (a corporation) was established in 1893, and rows of rental shops called kaiba were constructed in the terrace-style in Nakamachi. Here it is possible to envision the time of yesteryear when the street was thriving with the activity of the cocoon, raw silk, and textile businesses.
