The Graves of Tomioka Silk Mill “Factory Girls” (Ryuko-ji Temple)

A large number of “factory girls” from across Japan came to work at the government-run model factory, Tomioka Silk Mill, to learn milling techniques. Some among them succumbed to illness and died at a young age in Tomioka. Graves for “factory girls” who died between 1874 and 1901, when the mill was privatized, are on the premises of Ryuko-ji Temple.
